Game plan for Aatrox

Early game

Test a short exchange before staying in melee. Separate the damage sequence from the decision to pursue, especially when the opponent’s wave is large.

Team fights

Choose whether to threaten a side target or protect an ally. Enter when you can keep attacking, rather than absorbing every enemy spell at the start.

Mistake to avoid

Following a retreating opponent after your mobility and protection are spent.

Learn the champion’s kit

In the practice tool, cast each ability separately and check its range, targeting and effect. Read the passive before practising a sequence: it can change how attacks and spells work together.

P · Deathbringer Stance

Periodically, Aatrox's next basic attack deals bonus magic damage and heals him, based on the target's max health.

Q · The Darkin Blade

Aatrox slams his greatsword down, dealing physical damage. He can swing three times, each with a different area of effect.

Rank-one cooldown : 14 seconds

W · Infernal Chains

Aatrox smashes the ground, dealing damage to the first enemy hit. Champions and large monsters have to leave the impact area quickly or they will be dragged to the center and take the damage again.

Rank-one cooldown : 18 seconds

E · Umbral Dash

Passively, Aatrox heals when damaging enemy champions. On activation, he dashes in a direction.

Rank-one cooldown : 9 seconds

R · World Ender

Aatrox unleashes his demonic form, fearing nearby enemy minions and gaining attack damage, increased healing, and Move Speed. If he gets a takedown, this effect is extended.

Rank-one cooldown : 120 seconds

Abilities: official game data 16.20.1. Descriptions may change with balance updates.

Practice before ranked

First test each spell against a target dummy. Identify the skill you need to escape or survive before spending it offensively. Check alternate forms or empowered casts in the game too. Practise a sequence slowly, then repeat it while moving.

Before you engage

Check the enemy’s control and escape spells, your health and resources, ally position and retreat path. An available ultimate is not by itself a reason to commit.

Review your first games

Review one missed spell, one unnecessary death and one lost objective. Practise the specific mistake before adding complex sequences. Start with the role you intend to play.

Choose your role and build

Compare the build, rune page, skill priority and matchups for your role. Later purchases depend on the enemy team.

These guides explain gameplay basics. Build pages contain the selected patch, role and rank statistics.
