How to play Hwei: combos, tips and builds

Combos to practise with Hwei

AA = basic attack · EAA = empowered attack · 1/2/3 = cast or stage. Arrows indicate order, not instant presses.

Training sequence 1

  1. Subject: SerenityWE
  2. Subject: TormentEQ
  3. Subject: DisasterQQ

Begin with the first action, confirm its effect, then progress through the sequence. Stop if its prerequisite or retreat route is missing.

Checks before practising

  • WE, EQ and QQ are spell-book inputs, not separate ability casts.

Game plan for Hwei

Early game

Space around your main skill’s cooldown. Use a successful control or slow to make the next spell easier, rather than spending the whole rotation into a miss.

Team fights

Keep enough distance to cast again. Aim area spells where opponents must move around an objective and use control to protect your casting position.

Mistake to avoid

Using your only defensive control on poke before an enemy engages.

Learn the champion’s kit

In the practice tool, cast each ability separately and check its range, targeting and effect. Read the passive before practising a sequence: it can change how attacks and spells work together.

P · Signature of the Visionary

Hwei primes enemy champions he damages with his abilities for his signature finishing touch. Hitting an enemy with a second damaging spell completes his signature, leaving it beneath them. The signature detonates after a short delay, dealing magic damage to all enemies in range.

Q · Subject: Disaster

Hwei envisions a series of disasters, allowing him to paint a devastating blow. This ability replaces Hwei's abilities with damaging abilities: Devastating Fire, Severing Bolt, and Molten Fissure.

Rank-one cooldown : 10 seconds

W · Subject: Serenity

Hwei envisions a series of serenities, allowing him to paint invigorating settings. This ability replaces Hwei's abilities with utility abilities: Fleeting Current, Pool of Reflection, and Stirring Lights.

Rank-one cooldown : 18 seconds

E · Subject: Torment

Hwei envisions a series of torments, allowing him to paint controlling visages. This ability replaces Hwei's abilities with crowd control abilities: Grim Visage, Gaze of the Abyss, and Crushing Maw.

Rank-one cooldown : 12 seconds

R · Spiraling Despair

Hwei paints a vision of pure despair. The first enemy champion struck becomes the center of an expanding painting that slows and damages nearby enemies. The vision explodes after reaching its maximum size or when the champion dies.

Rank-one cooldown : 120 seconds

Abilities: official game data 16.20.1. Descriptions may change with balance updates.

Practice before ranked

First test each spell against a target dummy. Identify the skill you need to escape or survive before spending it offensively. Check alternate forms or empowered casts in the game too. Practise a sequence slowly, then repeat it while moving.

Before you engage

Check the enemy’s control and escape spells, your health and resources, ally position and retreat path. An available ultimate is not by itself a reason to commit.

Review your first games

Review one missed spell, one unnecessary death and one lost objective. Practise the specific mistake before adding complex sequences. Start with the role you intend to play.

Choose your role and build

Compare the build, rune page, skill priority and matchups for your role. Later purchases depend on the enemy team.

These guides explain gameplay basics. Build pages contain the selected patch, role and rank statistics.
