Tools to play around

What can go wrong

  • Boomerang Throw / Boulder TossUse the slow to make the next action easier. It does not replace checking distance, cooldowns and an escape route.
  • Hyper / WallopUse this control to create a follow-up window. Check the target’s defensive spells and your teammates’ range before committing.
  • A completed combo is only useful when your position, resources and follow-up are safe.

Abilities & tips

Open an ability to read its effect and a practical use tip.

PRage Gene

While in combat Gnar generates Rage. At maximum Rage his next ability will transform him into Mega Gnar, granting increased survivability and access to new spells.

Use it well

Read the effect and its conditions, then practise it alone. Build your sequence around the effect you can reliably reproduce.

QBoomerang Throw / Boulder Toss

Gnar throws a boomerang that damages and slows enemies it hits before returning to him. If he catches the boomerang its cooldown is reduced. Mega Gnar instead throws a boulder that stops on the first unit hit, damaging and slowing everything nearby. It can then be picked up to reduce the cooldown.

Use it well

Use the slow to make the next action easier. It does not replace checking distance, cooldowns and an escape route.

WHyper / Wallop

Gnar's attacks and spells hype him up, dealing bonus damage and granting him Move Speed. Mega Gnar is too enraged to be hyper and instead can rear up on his hind legs and smash down on the area in front of him, stunning enemies in an area.

Use it well

Use this control to create a follow-up window. Check the target’s defensive spells and your teammates’ range before committing.

EHop / Crunch

Gnar leaps to a location and bounces off the head of any unit he lands on, traveling further. Mega Gnar is too large to bounce and instead lands with earth-shattering force, dealing damage in an area around him.

Use it well

Decide where you want to finish the movement before casting. Using mobility to enter a fight can leave fewer options to retreat.

RGNAR!

Mega Gnar throws everything around him in a chosen direction, dealing damage and slowing them. Any enemy that hits a wall is stunned and takes bonus damage.

Use it well

Practise the hit area and target conditions first. Do not spend the rest of your rotation automatically when the opening damage misses.

Gnar combos: execution and timing

AA = basic attack · EAA = empowered attack · 1/2/3 = cast stage. Follow the order, not instant key presses.

Spell and attack trade: Hop / Crunch

  1. AA
  2. Hop / CrunchE
  3. Boomerang Throw / Boulder TossQ
  4. AA

With Gnar, start with Basic attack, then continue through Hop / Crunch → Boomerang Throw / Boulder Toss → Basic attack. This sequence starts in Mini Gnar. Watch the rage bar: a transformation changes Q/W/E and can alter your planned movement.

Mistake to avoid : Do not assume the same damage, control or follow-up when the required indicator is missing.

Game plan by role

Gnar · Top
Early game

Keep trades short until you understand the opponent’s main cooldown. Check the minion wave before chasing and preserve a route back to your tower.

Mid game

Decide between a side-lane push and joining the next objective. Push only as far as your vision and teammate positions allow.

Teamfights

Agree on your job before the fight: pressure a side, threaten a target or protect a carry. Save a key defensive tool when the enemy can turn on you.

06

Matchup preparation

Compare opponents in the build for the role you are actually playing. Then check their key control, escape and defensive spells before choosing your trade.

07

Practice checklist

  1. Cast each ability alone and identify its range, target conditions and stopping point.
  2. Practise the first sequence slowly. Repeat it while moving, without skipping the conditions shown on its card.
  3. After each attempt, identify the spell you would still have available to defend or retreat.
